April 2017: Beth Vander Hoek

"It is with great pride that I select Beth Vander Hoek for April’s MOST Outstanding Student Employee of the Month! I have witnessed Beth do a few Most Outstanding things over the past few weeks. I watched as she worked with one of our returning employees trying to get them up to speed on how a few policies/procedures have changed since they last worked. I watched as she meticulously went about her hourly rounds (I checked the sheet…just to see what she wrote down) as a Facility Manager in Rolfs Sports Recreation Center. Beth had no idea that I noticed her doing such a great job, and I think that how you preform your duties when no one is watching (or you think no one is watching), shows true character and integrity.

Recently, I told Beth how proud I was of her for nominating several of her colleagues for MOST Outstanding Awards. In my opinion, that is another trait of true leadership. Someone who nominates others and recognizes their talents and hard work are things that a true leader does. Lastly, when I told Matt Lewandowski that I selected Beth for this award he said “Beth is a great choice! She does a great job up front!"

So, for these reasons, I selected Beth Vander Hoek for April’s MOST Outstanding Student Employee of the Month!"

What do you want to be when you grow up?

After finishing up at Notre Dame, I hope to work in the field of international relations or foreign affairs, whether that be within a government agency or nonprofit organization.

What are the top 3 reasons you enjoy working at RecSports?

  1. Building relationships with the patrons - there's always someone new to meet!
  2. Working alongside some of the best students and staff that Notre Dame has to offer. My coworkers truly make my shifts enjoyable.
  3. Working as a Facility Manager has given me greater leadership and personable skills that have helped me in my academic and career endeavors.

What’s one thing you would like everyone at RecSports to know about you?

I recently completed Intermediate Arabic this past semester and will be using my Arabic skills while volunteer teaching abroad in Morocco this summer for 8 weeks!
