December 2016/January 2017: Meghan Cohoon
"I would like to nominate Meghan Cohoon for the December/January MOST Outstanding Student Employee of the Month. Meghan is an All-Star Lifeguard at Rockne Memorial who has worked for RecSports for several years. Meghan spent the Fall semester studying abroad in London, but when she returned she was practically a gift-wrapped present under a Christmas tree. We all know how difficult it can be to find staff to work over breaks, but this year Meghan was a real 'lifesaver.' Despite being exhausted from her travels, being excited to see her friends and family, and the general dread involved in lifeguarding the 6:00 a.m. shifts, Meghan signed up to cover 70% of these shifts over the break. In fact, the only 6:00 a.m. shifts that she did not cover were for a family vacation and her 21st birthday! In addition, Meghan acted as the supervisor for a week when I had to leave for a family emergency. She took several last minute shifts and was 'on-call' during this time.
We know that RecSports is blessed with many great employees...but how many of them are willing to jump into a pool to save someone's life at 6:00 a.m. in the morning when there is more than a foot of snow on the ground? And that is why I am nominating Meghan Cohoon for the December/January MOST Outstanding Student Employee of the Month."
- Sarah Ryckman, Aquatics Program Coordinator (Rockne Memorial)
I really enjoy working out and cycling more specifically; I got really into spinning/cycling while I was abroad in the fall in London. I'm also really interested generally in learning about all-things health, fitness, and nutrition so I love reading blogs, magazines, books, etc. pertaining to those things. And anyone who knows me can tell you I'm also very passionate about my love for coffee.
Year at Notre Dame
What do you want to be when you grow up?
As of right now I hope to go off to medical school post-graduation; I don't know specifically what specialty of medicine I would want to study or go in to, but I'm definitely aiming towards becoming a medical doctor.
What are the top 3 reasons you enjoy working at RecSports?
- I love working at RecSports first and foremost because of my boss, Sarah Ryckman. She's one of the most understanding people I've ever had the pleasure of working for. She's always making sure my shifts fit well into my hectic schedule outside of work and I appreciate that about her.
- I enjoy spending time in active environments- being around people who are looking to improve their health and fitness is something that makes working much more enjoyable.
- I get to meet different faculty and staff, as well as other students who come to swim at the pool; people love to chat (when I'm not in the lifeguard chair, of course) and I really like getting to know people outside of the classroom.
What’s one thing you would like everyone at RecSports to know about you?
I grew up competitively swimming in both the Rolf's Natatorium and the Rockne Pool for thirteen years and I'm so happy that I get to continue spending time working in the environments that helped shape who I am today.
