December 06, 2012

For both Broom Broom Cowww! and Twice as Nice, a trip to the championship game came as no surprise. Both teams held a Broomball Title each of the last two years, with Twice as Nice being the reigning champions. We knew we were in for a good match up.

With a lot on the line, both teams played hard. Twice as Nice jumped out to an early lead after a high-arcing shot glanced off the goalie and went into the net. Up 1-0, they continued to press on offense, looking to put the game away early. However, the next opportunity seemed like a BBC!!! goal, but chance favored TAN again. The ball went into the TAN goal, but it was called back for an offensive crease violation.

TAN survived all but the last 5 seconds of the first half. With time winding down, BBC!!! made one final push down the left side and around the curve of the rink. Mitch dodged and drove his way all the way to the side of the net, where he was able to sneak the ball past the goalie for the equalizer just as the halftime whistle blew.

As the second half began, BBC!!! found new life. They attacked TAN with ferocity, taking shots without hesitation. The TAN goalie held strong with some amazing diving saves. She went high and low to allow their team a chance to win the game, but it was not enough. With 2 minutes remaining in the contest, BBC!!! found a crossing attacker in front of the net who put it away. As time ran out, the "Broom Broom Cowww!!!"s could be heard throughout the rink.

Mitch Kochanski was elated at his team's victory, but he and his team were used to winning. Describing his team as a dynasty, due to their championship run 2 years ago, where they were the victors. They were absent from last year's championships due to study abroad. He credited the victory to the girls on their team saying, "we have the best girls out there, and they were key in our win. We couldn't have done it without them."

Connor Ryan, for Twice as Nice, was happy with his team's performance but was disappointed they did not repeat as champions. But the fact that they made it back to the championship final was a feat in itself. Throughout the year they lost a lot of players due to injuries and graduation. It was key acquisitions that they made at the beginning and during the season that brought them here. Throughout the season they played off each other and they put together a winning team. Unfortunately it wasn't enough, but the held their heads high as they walked off the ice.
