Alumni had some unfinished business to take care of. After falling short in last year’s championship game in overtime, they have their eyes set on the championship again this year and Dillon was the first opponent skating in their way.
This highly anticipated matchup between bitter rivals was the first game featured as Game of the Week in 2013. While it was not as contentious as both teams had hoped, it made for an excited match. Alumni jumped out to an early lead, and it never looked back. According to sophomore Joe Aiken, that was exactly what they set out to do, score early and score often. “We tried to go out there and just have fun and put a few goals in early.” Alumni freshman Will Kelly attributed their success to the play of his line mates Jack Smith and Brendan Hurley. “We really moved the puck well, and we played off our crowd’s intensity.”
While Alumni had a lot of success on offense scoring 5 goals, they did recognize that they had some things to work on for next week. They had 3 power play opportunities during the game but weren’t able to capitalize on any of them. That is definitely something that they want to improve upon for next week and they take on a tough opponent in St. Ed’s who made it to the semifinals last year.
For Dillon, that was not the way they wanted to start off the season. They have some glaring issues to work on for next week. While their defense was pretty porous, their lack of offense was the real issue. The Dillon goalies played fairly well, but they were under constant barrage the entire game. It was inevitable that a few pucks would get past them. The locker room after the game was pretty melancholy and the players declined to comment on the game. Dillon’s 1 goal in the last minute of the game was a highlight for them.
Hopefully they can shore up some of their offensive and defensive issues for next week and bounce back from the tough defeat. Luckily for Dillon the loss had no playoff implications, as it was not a divisional game.
