The Wrestling Club kicked off its competitive season last Sunday, January 25th, with a home meet in the Stepan Center on Notre Dame’s campus. The Fighting Irish hosted the Universities of Pittsburgh, Michigan, and Wisconsin in the first quad-meet hosted by the Club.
ND vs. Pittsburgh (W)
Notre Dame started the day off well with a close 26-24 victory over Pittsburgh. Key individual victories came from freshman Diego Fernandez del Castillo and sophomore Garrett Schmelling, wrestling in the 125 lb. and 149 lb. weight classes, respectively. Fernandez del
Castillo won by fall with 24 seconds remaining in the first period, amassing the maximum of 6 points for the team score. Schmelling won by technical fall in the second period of his match to give the team 5 points on their way to victory.
ND vs. Michigan (L)
The Irish showed that there is some room for improvement after falling 42-13 to Michigan in the second match of the day. The only wrestlers to secure wins against the Wolverines were senior Matt Boylan and sophomore Ben Evans, wrestling in the 157 lb. and 235 lb. weight classes, respectively. Boylan won by a score of 12-3, yielding a major decision and 4 team points. Evans defeated his opponent 6-4 for 3 team points. Freshman Francisco Huizar
added 6 points to the team score after accepting a forfeit at the 174 lb. weight class.
ND vs. Wisconsin (W)
Notre Dame finished the season-opening event on a high note by knocking off Wisconsin 27-23 to bring their record on the season to 2 wins and 1 loss. Garrett Schmelling helped propel the team to victory, this time with a first-period fall to give the team 6 points. Freshman Jackson Wrede secured the victory for the Irish with a thrilling 3-2 victory at 235 lbs., which added 3 crucial points to the team score.
