April 11-13, 2008

This past weekend, the Notre Dame Bowling Club traveled to Oberlin, OH to participate in Oberlin College’s Unconventional Tournament. Kent State defeated Oberlin in the finals to win the tournament for the 10th consecutive year. Under the leadership of club president and captain, Nick Manieri, the bowling club finished 5th in the tournament with a head-to-head record of 2-3. Manieri finished his collegiate bowling career with an average of 190 for the weekend and a high game of 245. Nick finished in 9th place individually and had the 2nd highest game of the tournament, second only to Kevin Kommel’s perfect 300 score.

The club’s top woman bowler this weekend was Becky Caples who had a 177 average and a high game of 185 for the tournament. The team was also helped by the efforts of freshman Allie Hensley who had a 156 average and bowled a high game of 180. Lindsey Zimmerman, Alex Desch and Tracy Welch subbed in and out throughout the tournament and contributed to the team’s performance this weekend.  

February 15-17, 2008

Notre Dame finished 52nd in the Hoosier Classic this weekend. The closely bunched team was led by captain Nich Manieri with a 148 average, while James Breen and Becky Caples were just a pin behind at 147. Allie Hensley rolled a 137 average and teammates CJ Kaltenbach and Lindsey Zimmerman also contributed to the scoring. Lindenwood and Saginaw, the number one and two teams in the country, tied for first in the strong field.  

January 25-27, 2008

The 12th Annual Blue and Gold Classic changed venue this year, as it was hosted by Chippewa Bowl. One of the largest and strongest fields in the country participated Eighty-one teams, 53 men’s and 28 women’s, including two time men’s national champion Saginaw Valley and reigning women’s national champion Wichita State, enjoyed a great weekend on the lanes. Almost the entire draw consisted of scholarship varsity teams either ranked or having points and placing just below the top twenty. The atmosphere was very much that of a collegiate all star competition and the staff and Ambassador Club at Chippewa extended itself in hosting the event.

The men’s draw featured twelve of the top 20 ranked teams, including Wichita State, 1; Lindenwood, 2; Saginaw Valley State, 3; Purdue5; Calumet, 8; Florida State, 11; Robert Morris, IL, 12; Michigan state, 14; Missouri Baptist, 15; Vincennes, 17; martin Methodis, 18; and Indiana, 20.

Thirteen of the top 20 women’s teams in the country ventured to South Bend, including Lindenwood, 2; Wichita State, 3; McKendree, 5; Purdue, 6; Penn State, 7; Robert Morris, 10; Martin Methodist, 11; Ball State, 12; South Dakota State, 15; Florida State, 16; Ohio State, 17; Calumet, 18; and Michigan State, 20.

Nick Manieri led the Irish with a 179 average with high games of 195, 198, and 199, finishing in the top third of men’s scoring. James Breen averaged 155, including a high game of 198. Chris Kieser rolled a 178 in posting a 148 average, Nicholas Jaffa had a 175 high game and 136 average, while CJ Kaltenbach averaged 130, with a high game of 189.

Notre Dame’s women’s squad was led by Becky Caples 149 average and 178 high game. Allie Hensley was close behind with a 142 average and 179 game. Lindsey Zimmerman rolled a 154 on her way to a 129 average; and Alex Desch posted a high game of 154. Sierran McNamara and Tracy Welch also contributed to the Irish scoring.

The two men’s tournament high averages were both posted by Saginaw Valley Stae as Dan MacLelland and Steve MacLelland averaged 230 and 217 respectively. Saginaw won the men’s event, with Wichita second. Rocio Restrepo of Wichita State averaged 214 top the women’s tournament as the Shockers won the event.

January 18-20, 2008

Notre Dame’s bowling club tuned up for this weekend’s annual Blue Gold Invitational with a league tournament in Toledo. Chris Kieser led the Irish with a 158 average on the difficult Viper PBA pattern shot on the lanes. Nick Manieri followed with a 148, while James Breen, 137, Allie Hensley, 130, CJ Kaltenbach, 109, Lindsey Zimmerman, 131, and Alex Desch, 110, completed the scoring for a 29th place showing on Saturday.

On Sunday, the club showed significant improvement, bowling on a PBA Chameleon pattern. Nick Manieri had high game with a 219, and averaged 167. Breen improved 24 pins as he posted a 161 average, while Hensley improved 18 pins to a 148. The club moved up to 27th place in the second event of the weekend.

This year’s Blue Gold will move to Chippewa Bowl and approximately 70 teams from across the country are expected to attend on both Saturday and Sunday.  

September 28-30, 2007

The American Heartland Bowling Conference kicked off its season in Pittsburgh this weekend. Notre Dame finished 32nd in a strong field, as the tournament was won by reigning national champion, Saginaw Valley State, one of many varsity teams entered.

Chris Kieser led the Irish with a high team average of 204.8, and Nick Manieri rolled a high game of 233. Allie Hensley had a personal best game of 181, including three strikes to open and four to close the game.

The club did well in the baker games, in which each club member throws two frames for a composite team score. After three very close losses in the opening games, the Irish won the last two games. One win was over 9th place Cincinnati, the club needed to roll eight straight strikes to finish the game, and it responded to the challenge.

Five women competed in their first tournament for the Irish, and the young squad shows promise for the season. James Breen, Carly Sarachman, Lindsey Zimmerman, Maggy Siefert, and Alexandra Desch contributed to the scoring.  

January 26-28, 2007

 Notre Dame’s bowling club hosted the annual Blue and Gold Classic at Beacon Bowl this weekend. The event is one of the largest national collegiate tournaments, with sixty-eight teams participating, forty-four men’s and twenty-two women’s squads. The tournament featured the defending NCAA national men’s champion Saginaw Valley State, and defending women’s national champion, Lindenwood, as well as many other top teams in the country.

The men’s event was won by Saginaw Valley State, whose entire team averaged over 200 for nine games. Lindenwood, Purdue, Wichita State, and Morehead State rounded out the men’s top five. High game scores for the men’s event included games of 286, 284, and 278.

Wichita State captured the women’s championship, with their top bowler averaging 201. Lindenwood, Newman, Morehead State and Purdue completed the women’s top five Jim Talamo paced the Irish with a 184.9 average, a 208 high game, and a 1664 total for nine games. This was good for 69th place in a field of 296 in the men’s competition. Pavan Sadarangani rolled five games for a 166.6 average, and posted the high game score for the Irish, at 224. Kim Lavigne averaged 164.6 with a 211 high game, while Nick Manieri totaled 1237 for eight games, a 154.6 average. Adam Lacock was just behind with a 152.2 average. James Breen rolled an 819 total for six games, and freshman Ryan Pantanges chipped in with a 470 total in his four games

January 19-21, 2007

Seeking a break from the cold, Notre Dame’s bowling club journeyed to the Las Vegas Shootout, finishing 33rd among 40 teams. Jim Talamo paced the club with a 182.5 average for his five games, while Van Koppersmith rolled a 205 and a 202 on the tournament oiled alleys, the lone Irish bowler to break 200 twice. Dan Martin, Nick Manieri, Kim LaVigne, and Allison Klein rounded out the Irish squad in the field of 267 entries from across the country. Talamo finished 68th and Koppersmith 82nd in individual standings.

November 10-12, 2006

Notre Dame finished fourteenth in their season opener, The Warhawk Open, at Iowa this weekend. Dan Martin was top finisher for the Irish, posting games of 202, 207, 198, 157, 167, 143, 147, 181, and 147 for a 1549 total and 343th place. Van Koppersmith rolled a 212 on the way to a 1528 total for 36th place, and Jim Talamo, with 1503 pins, edged teammate Nick Manieri’s 1502 score as the pair finished 38th and 39th. Kim LaVigne finished with a 1449 total, good for 45gth place. The Irish had climbed as high as tenth at one point in the tournament, before falling back in the pack. 

February 10-12, 2006

The Hoosier Classic in Indianapolis closed the curtain on this season for the Notre Dame bowling club. Van Koppersmith twice broke 200 as his 170 average led the Irish. Jm Talamo at 166 and Dan Martin at 163, with a team high game of 235, followed close behind. Tom Talamo and JB Bertumen completed the top five scorers with averages fo 152 and 139 respectively. The team finished 45th among 50 teams.

Notre Dame placed 22nd among 29 teams in the American Heartland Bowling Conference tournament in Toledo. Daniel Martin paced the club with a 193 average, including three games of 202,205, and 207. Captain Van Koppersmith rolled a 180 average, featuring a high game of 237. Jim Talamo posted a 169 average, while Tom Talamo averaged 158 and JB Bertumen completed the top five for the Irish with a 140 average.

The team will head to Indianapolis for the Hoosier Challenge next weekend, completing the season.  

January 20-22, 2006

Fifty-eight schools converged on Beacon Bowl this weekend for the 8th Annual Blue and Gold Classic. As the tournament is designated Tier 1 and is the second largest intercollegiate tournament of the season to date, many of the top ranked teams in the country competed. After four games, the Irish men were in the middle of the pack when a team slump in the final two games dropped the squad to a 38th place finish among the forty men’s squads.

Captain Van Koppersmith rolled a 183 average, including a 221 game, to lead the Irish. Jim Talamo averaged 163, while his brother Tom finised at 148. Vance McClenton posted a 141 average, and Dan Martin and JB Bertumen averaged 160 and 150 respectively.

11th ranked Newman University took top honors, followed by 14th ranked Morehead State, 12th ranked Penn State, 2nd ranked Wichita State, and 9th ranked Purdue in the top five places. Saginaw Valley State, the nations #1 ranked team, finished 6th, just ahead of Lindenwood, ranked 7th nationally.

In the women’s division, the Irish were unable to field an entire squad due to illness, and dropped to lat place. Top ranked Wichita State won the event, followed by 5th ranked Lindenwood, 22nd ranked Purdue, 2nd ranked Morehead State, 14th ranked Newman and 15th ranked Ball State.

Among the Irish women, Kim LaVigne had the top average at 136, with a high game of 175. Allison Klein averaged 130, including a 169 high game, and mary Bocik averaged 120 for the tournament.

The Irish will compete this weekend in the Eagle Classic, hosted by Dayton University.  

October 28-30, 2005

Notre Dame’s bowling club opened Amercan Heartland Bowling Conference play this weekend with a 24th place finish in the event hosted by Saginaw. Michigan State won the tournament.

Jim Talamo’s 187 was the high average for the Irish, featuring a high game of 211. Vance McClenton posted a 178 average, with a 191 high game. Dan Martin rolled a pair of 200 games, and Van Koppersmith averaged 157, with a high game of 173. JB Bertumen and Tom Talamo averaged 146 and 131 respectively.  

January 21-23, 2005

Despite a winter blizzard that forced sixteen teams to cancel their trip to South Bend, Beacon Bowl hosted the 8th Blue & Gold Classic this weekend. Although two top ten teams were unable to travel, six others competed in a field of forty-eight men's and women's squads. In men's play, 3rd ranked Kansas took the title, followed by 13th ranked Nebraska, 4th ranked Wichita State, number 1 Saginaw Valley, and 11th ranked Lindenwood. Teams such as Arizona State, represented much of the country. The Irish were ranked 20th after the first day of competition, but fell to 33rd on Sunday, when two Irish starters were unable to bowl. Van Koppersmith and Vance McClenton led the club, with strong showings by Jim Talamo, Marcus Radley, and Nick Manieri. JB Bertumen and Tom Talamo stepped in admirably on Sunday. Kim LaVigne paced the women's squad, with Allison Klein and Mary Bocik also posting top scores for the Irish. Katie Hunt, Denise Trgovich, and Danielle LaFramboise rounded out the top five for the weekend. The young squad finished last in the field, with Wichita State, Newman College, Western Illinois, McKendree, and Lindenwood claiming the top five spots.

November 19 - 21 , 2004

Notre Dame fielded a women’s team for the first time this weekend, as it joined the men’s squad in Ann Arbor as Michigan hosted the American Heartland Intercollegiate Bowling Conference tournament. In their debut, the women finished sixth among the nine competing women’s teams. Allison Klein posted a 153.4 average to lead a closely bunched line-up. Kim LaVigne followed at 152, with Denise Trgovich just behind at 151.4. Daniele LaFramboise and Rachael Schermitzler posted very solid averages of 140.8 and 132.4 respectively.

The men’s squad continues to make progress, moving up to 19th among 26 teams. Pavan Sadarangani had the fourth highest average of the tournament at 231, with a high game of 259 and a low game of 199. Van Koppersmith also averaged over 200, at 209.4, posting a high score of 257. Vance McClenton rolled games of 218 and 200 to pick his average up to 187, and JB Bertumen’s 231 improved his average to 180.3. Tom Talamo and Jim Talamo averaged 166.3 and 174.8 as the Irish continue to improve their scores throughout the lineup.
