A shorthanded field hockey club fell to Miami OH, 3-2, this Sunday at Riehle field. With only one sub available at the beginning of the game, an injury early in the second half left the squad with no relief. The Irish scored the only two goals of the first half, the first unassisted by Danielle Fedele, and the second by freshman Suzie Carlsen, also unassisted. However, fatigue showed as the Red Hawks sent wave after wave of fresh players onto the field. Miami scored all three goals in the last six minutes of the game, the final goal coming with approximately a minute left. Catherine Duffy was in goal for the Irish and was credited with nine saves.

The Notre Dame field hockey club opened their season with a pair of games at Summit Field in Cincinnati, Ohio this past weekend. The first game matched the Irish against the highly touted Cincinnati Centurions, a local co-ed club team. Notre Dame played tough but fell behind 3-0 at half. While unable to recover the lead, Notre Dame was able to hold the Centurions after some halftime adjustments. Junior goalie Catherine Duffy and freshman keeper Celia Johns split time in the cage, both making fantastic saves for the Irish.
The second game pitted Notre Dame against Ohio University. The Irish took control of the game early on, led by strong midfield transition by veteran senior co-captains Lauren Petrozziello and Catherina Pinnaro and sophomore Nellie Gotebeski. Forwards senior Danielle Fedele and freshman Mary Ulliman also came out strong for Notre Dame. After applying constant pressure to the Ohio goal, Notre Dame forward Kate Sheedy connected with a pass from Ulliman in front of the goalie’s pads midway through the first half.
Ohio and Notre Dame traded shots until center midfielder Lauren Petrozziello scored off a pass from Danielle Fedele during a penalty corner to put the Irish up 2-0 at half. The Irish continued to play well into the second half, determined to build their lead. Ulliman scored off a pass from Nellie Gotebeski to make the score 3-0. Notre Dame’s smart passing and constant communication enabled them to keep possession of the ball. Sheedy scored again when she deflected in a pass from Lauren Petrozziello from the top of the circle. Petrozziello then notched her second goal when she scored unassisted with ten minutes remaining in the game. Despite a strong defensive effort all game, Notre Dame gave up an Ohio goal off a breakaway in the final minutes, bringing the score to 5-1. Ulliman added a goal to make the final score 6-1. Johns and Duffy again both made great plays for the Irish.

Notre Dame’s Club Field Hockey team ended their fall season with a bang this weekend. The club traveled to the Ohio State round robin Saturday morning and opened play with the University of Dayton. Battling a fierce wind and wet field, the Irish were strong from the opening minute and dominated play throughout in a 6-2 victory. Junior Danielle Fedele registered a hat trick and an assist to lead the Irish scoring. Seniors Meghan Bennett and Mary Davis, and freshman Danielle Straccia all found the back of the net to compete the scoring. Sophomore Claire Kenney and Senior Meredith Gluck each contributed an assist. Catherine Duffy had another strong day in goal, making some key saves when the score was still close.
On Sunday, Notre Dame’s first faced off with Ohio State University, a team they had shut out at home earlier in the season. Notre Dame dominated the game, maintaining possession of the ball and rattling the Buckeye goalie. The team was in sync, maintaining great communication and making use of the entire field. Freshman Claire Kenney scored the first goal of the game, assisted by senior Lauren Brinkman. Freshman Danielle Straccia also scored a goal in the first half, assisted by senior Rebecca Mosca, to give the Irish a 2-0 lead at the half. Ohio State came out with a vengeance in the second half, and also played more men at once then league rules permit. With their squad bolstered by the men now on the field, the Buckeyes halved the Irish lead with one goal, and then tied the game in the final thirty seconds as one of the OSU men scored again to knot the final score at 2-2.
Following a short break, the Irish concluded play against Miami Ohio. Meghan Bennett scored in the first minute of the game, setting a great pace for the Irish. Meredith Gluck scored twice off penalty corners, assisted by sophomore Lynda Pearl and Fedele. Davis also scored, assisted by Gluck, as the Irish rolled to a 5-0 victory. The tie with OSU and last week’s loss to Indiana in Bloomington were the only two blemishes to an outstanding fall season.
September 28-30, 2006
Flashing lightning quick power and playing stellar defense, Notre Dame’s field hockey club swept a pair of 2-0 victories this weekend over The Ohio State University. As a fiery Irish offense constantly pressured the Buckeye’s goalie, freshman forward Danielle Straccia scored off a hard drive from junior midfielder Lauren Petrozziello to open the first game’s scoring. OSU’s attempts to mount an attack were consistently thwarted by the stifling Irish defense, led by freshman Nellie Gotebeski. With ten minutes remaining in the contest, senior forward Meghan Bennett converted a feed from senior Mary Davis to secure the Irish victory.
In the second game, strong transition passing at midfield by Petrozziello and seniors Meredith Gluck and Lauren Brinkman gave the Irish a possession advantage. Junior forward Marie Chervanick knocked in a rebound off the goalie’s pads midway through the first half. Chervanick scored the only other goal of the game, unassisted in the second half. Sophomore goalie Catherine Duffy registered five saves in the second game to garner her second shutout of the day.

The Irish club field hockey team opened their fall season Sunday with a 1-0 victory over Wittenberg University in Springfield, Ohio.
Although the squad did not have much time to prepare, they came out strong against the DIII varsity Tigers. The Irish controlled the field for most of the first half with the only goal coming seven minutes into the game off of a penalty corner. Senior Meghan Bennett put a hard shot past the Tigers’ goalie with assists coming from Mary Davis and Lauren Petrozziello.
One goal turned out to be enough as the strong defense led by sophomore goalie Catherine Duffy achieved a shut out. Duffy racked up fifteen saves, one coming at the end of the game to shut down the Tigers’ breakaway. Cat Pinnaro, Jessica Cortez, and Ryan Reynolds led a stellar defensive effort. However, the key play of the game came with two minutes left when freshman Claire Kenney made a spectacular save on a ball behind Duffy to clinch the Irish victory.
The Irish also tied the Tigers 3-3 in stroke competition following regulation with goals by Meredith Gluck, Lauren Petrozziello, and Lauren Brinkman. The Irish will continue their season at home on September 10th with a game against the Cincinnati Centurions.
