The Irish finished second in a very tough eleven team field where only the top two received berths to nationals. The nationals will be held at the Naval Academy May 30 - June 1.
Tough battles were fought in both divisions. In A division action on Saturday, Irish skipper John Dailey began the day sailing with crew Ali Donahue. As the breeze built, heavier crews Jaci Chase and Joe Peris rotated in to help deal with the twenty knot winds. B Division skipper Tim Roy began Saturday’s racing sailing with Kerry Kilbourn, but went to the heavier Chris May as the day progressed. At the conclusion of the days racing, Notre Dame held second, with Northwestern, Michigan State, and Minnesota all close enough to make a move on Sunday.
Racing on Sunday was postponed until mid-morning due to lack of wind. When the breeze filled to a shifty 8-12 knots, the Irish skippers went back to their light air crews. Only three races per division were sailed on Sunday. In the final A division race, Dailey and Donahue used their superior speed to overcome questionable tactical decisions and finish second. In the final B division race, Roy and Kilbourn ended their regatta with authority by being first off the starting line and never looking back. With all racing complete, the Irish held onto their second place position over Minnesota by a margin of 7 points. Throughout the regatta, the Irish sailing team relied heavily on the sage advice of their coach Mark Teborek and on the diligent efforts of their camera crew/support team/stat trackers Paul Cordes and Tim O’Brien.
