Instructional Programs - Classes and Clinics

The following is a description of the classes offered on an annual basis.

Aikido

Aikido is characterized by a philosophy of nonviolence.  This is accomplished through the nonviolent style of training: physical strength is kept to a minimum, while suppleness, dynamics, flexibility and inner strength are all promoted.  Aikido is a defensive martial art that employs evasion, redirection, joint locks & throws.

Ballet

Ballet is one of the world's most graceful dance styles.  This class will develop the technical skills of dance and help the aspiring ballerina to improve the discipline necessary to move with the grace of a swan.   A beginner class is offered for those new to the art form.  Those with previous ballet training might try the intermediate class to further develop their skill.  The more advanced student with well-developed skill would find the Pointe class more challenging.

Brazilian Dance

Brazilian dance is a high-energy aerobic (individual) dancing class encompassing the true spirit of Rio Carnaval.  This includes a combination of various dance forms, such as Samba, Axe & Pagode.

Cross Country Ski Clinics

Cross-country skiing is one of the most difficult endurance sports you can try.  It uses every major muscle group and burns a tremendous amount of calories per hour in execution.  Clinics are offered during the winter month (weather permitting) on the Notre Dame Golf Course.

Golf Lessons

Golf Lessons are available to all golfing levels and is a fun way to improve your overall games and ultimately your scores on the golf course. Taking lessons is great motivation for taking in a round of golf in between sessions. Lessons taken in a small group instruction gives you the opportunity to network and find playing companions while still receiving individual attention.

Lessons are tailored to each participant’s level of golf experience. For someone who is new to the game of golf, their focus would be to learn the basics of the game. The basic golf skills, rules and etiquette will be taught.

For golfers who have been playing the game and would like to improve their scores, focus would be on shot placement, swing analysis andworking on the short game.

Irish Step

Irish Step is a recreational, beginner level Irish dance class. The basic techniques and steps for the Jig, Reel, Slip jig, and Ceildh dances are taught as a way to get a good workout and have a lot of fun in the process.

Jazz-Hip Hop Fusion

Jazz/Hip-Hop Fusion is an integration of elements found in both jazz and hip-hop routines.  The class begins with a 30 minute warm up, which contains cardio, stretching and isolations to get the entire body warmed up.  The rest of the class involves students learning several dance combinations that we will build on during each class.  It's a great workout and a lot of fun.

Martial Arts

Learn the fundamentals of Martial Arts through a unique combination of Tae Kwon Do and Japanese Jiu Jitsu known as Cooper Ryu Vee Jitsu. This beginner level class will focus on conditioning of basic movements as well as self-defense techniques. Students will be introduced to blocks, strikes, and kicks as well as mat skills such as rolls and falls that are integral to executing throws. No experience is necessary; this class builds your foundation from the ground up. However, even those with previous training will be challenged - this is a great way to get back into the martial arts!

Note:  Students will not earn belt rank through this course.  

Individual Latin Dance

  • uses the steps of latin dance
  • combined to make up a work out
  • fast pace
Latin Dance

  • 2 course levels, beginner & intermediate
  • Couples signups are encouraged
  • Various forms taught such as: Salsa, Mambo, Merengue & Chachacha
Sailing Lessons

Sailing lessons are designed to teach the beginner the basics of sailing beginning with basic terms and safety concerns. Learn skills that can be taken away and used to get out doors and enjoy future summers on the water.

SCUBA

The Open Water Scuba Diver course is your first step into the underwater world.  It is the most exhilarating experience you may ever have.  The course is divided into three sections.  First is the lecture portions with your Open Water manual and instructional DVD, followed by four ten question quizzes and a final exam.  Second is completing the required confined water sessions.  There are five confined water sessions of which you will be learning the skills required to be comfortable in the water with your scuba equipment.  The final step is completing four open water training dives at the location of your choice.  You will not receive your Open Water Scuba Diver course until the dives have been completed and logged.  Both NAUI and PADI certifications are available. 

Squash

Whether you are an experienced squash player or just want to learn the basics, this course will help you better understand the sport of Squash. Classes will begin with fundamentals and basic mechanics of the swing, Progressing into the development of skills to move the ball around the court with precision. A great way to learn the game and get fit in the process! 

Swim Lessons

Get ready for the lake or the pool with RecSports Swim Lessons. Our WSI certified instructors teach beginners how to float, have proper body positions and master those introductory skills that they will use throughout their lives.  Our sessions also offer the opportunity for more advanced swimmers to developing their stroke and coordination.  Classes are offered every semester at Rockne Memorial Pool and are available for both children and adults.  
 

Swing Dance

A beginner class designed to introduce participants to swing dancing in the form of single and triple step east coast and Charleston.  They will develop a foundation of American swing dance that will give them confidence on any social dance floor.  Weekly lessons will focus on technique, repertoire, and development of personal style, with emphasis on the principles of leading and following. 

Tai Chi

An “internal” martial art that helps develop flexibility, strength, inner awareness & balance. The exercise consists of slow motion movements through 48 different postures, which exercises all of one’s muscles as well as internal organs. The result is an increase in inner control and strength, the reduction of stress & a fuller awareness of one’s mental, physical and spiritual power.

Tennis Instruction

Tennis...  The game for a lifetime!  RecSports offers classes for beginner and intermediate players. The beginner class is for individuals who are starting to play or have limited experience while still trying to get the ball over the net. Teaching will focus on basic strokes, rules and etiquette. The intermediate class is designed for players who can place short shots with moderate success, can sustain a rally at slow pace but is not comfortable with all strokes. Instruction will be geared to consistency and placement of strokes while including net play, approach shots, overheads, lobs, spin serves, and tactics.

Please bring your own racquet.  All participants are required to wear non-marking shoes.
