6 months - 5 years
This class incorporates the parent directly into the child's swimming education. Although led by a certified instructor, skills are completed by the child with the parent's help. While focusing on the child's comfort in the water, the program builds swimming readiness by emphasizing fun in the water. It introduces elementary skills, such as water entry, kicking, blowing bubbles, and arm circles, to create a familiarity with skills needed to perform once the child is read for regular group lessons.
Level I ~ Water Exploration:
Become comfortable in the water.
The first level is for students who have no prior swimming experience and
is designed to lay a foundation of skills to be used throughout the Learn to Swim program while along the way, developing good attitudes and safe practices around the water. Skills introduced in Level I include: enter and exit water safety, submerging mouth nose and eyes; opening eyes under water to retrieve submerged object; exhaling underwater; front and back floating; as well as basic water safety rules.
Level II ~ Fundamental Aquatic Skills:
Success with fundamental skills.
Students must be able to enter water unassisted, move for 5 yards, bob 5 times to chin level and safely exit the water; float for 3 seconds on front and back. Students are encouraged to continue building their base of knowledge by becoming less reliant upon instructor aid. This is accomplished by having student perform skills, such as jumping into the water, submerging entire head, jellyfish float, front and back glides, bobbing in the water, and treading water. Students are introduced to the front and back crawl.
Level III ~ Stroke Development:
Additional Guided Practice
Students must be able to step into chest-deep water and move into 5 second front and back floats and be able to swim 15 feet on their front and on their back. This class introduces students to rotary breathing while increasing the distance for front and back crawl. New swimming skills such as the Butterfly-kick and body motion as well as kneeling or standing dives. Safety skills such as a reaching assist and the H.E.L.P and Huddle positions are introduced.
Level IV ~ Stroke Improvement:
Develop confidence in learned strokes & improve other skills
Students must be able to jump in and swim 15 yards of front crawl, treat of float 30 seconds, and then swim 15 yards with the back crawl. This class improves endurance of strokes learned thus far (front and back crawl). Strokes introduced are the breaststroke, elementary backstroke, and butterfly. Rotary breathing, along with survival and back float are solidified while stride position dives and feet-first surface dives are taught, as well as basic lifesaving skills such as throwing assist and safe diving rules.
Level V ~ Stroke Refinement:
Further coordination and refinement of strokes
Like the title implies, Level 5 concentrates on refining strokes and skills already learned, while introducing new skills, including sidestroke, open turns for front and back crawl, front and backstroke flip turns, and tuck and pike surface dives. Emphasis is placed on perfecting front and back crawl, while continuing to increase proficiency in elementary backstroke, butterfly, breaststroke and sidestroke.
Level VI ~ Swimming and Skill Proficiency:
Stroke refinement for ease, efficiency, power and smoothness over greater distances. Four options:
- Personal Water Safety
- Fundamentals of Diving
- Lifeguard Readiness
- Fitness Swimmer
Adult Lessons:
For those who are timid in the water, or who would like help refining technique, this class for adults helps those who have never had a lesson or those who are getting back into the pool after a long absence, as well as those wanting to improve power, efficiency and/or endurance or want stroke tips to help in biathlons/events.
Private Lessons:
Offered for both children and adults, they the opportunity to have one-on-one time with an instructor to help them over hurdles experienced with swimming. Children's lessons are taught during family swim times only. Adult private lessons offer the same one-on-one experience and can also be focused toward more experienced swimmers looking for improved swimming techniques for biathlons. Adult lessons are available during lap or open swims. Contact the head lifeguard for arrangements, 631-2856.
