General Policies & Entering
COMPETITIVE RULES
Interhall
Competition in all sports is open to Notre Dame undergraduates
only and will be conducted on the basis of residency; i.e. players
on teams must represent the same living (hall or off-campus) unit.
Play will be conducted in accordance with policies stated.
Graduate/Faculty/Staff
Selected activities are reserved for competition between
Notre Dame graduate students, faculty and staff.
Undergraduates are not eligible.
There are no other restrictions in this division.
Campus
In certain sports, as indicated by notices, open competition
will prevail.
Rosters may be submitted containing players from any living
unit and any classification; undergraduate, graduate student staff
or faculty of Notre Dame.
Holy Cross College students and Saint Mary's College students
are ineligible.
Co-Rec
All CoRec events are Campus events as described
above.
These sports may be entered by any Notre Dame student, faculty
or staff member.
Sports may impose gender restrictions and special rules
to promote inclusive play in some events.
Registration Policy
Most RecSports activities require advance sign-up in person
at the RecSports Office.
Dates are posted notifying students and staff when registration
begins for a particular program as well as the deadline, if any.
No entries will be accepted before the registration period
opens.
Groups entering a team for competition must submit their
roster on an official RecSports roster form.
All information must be supplied for each team member.
If there is an entry fee associated with the activity,
the fee must accompany the entry form.
Only team Insurance forms may be provided to the captain
at the time the team is registered.
All insurance forms and waivers must be completed before
a teams first game. For further information on insurance
requirements, please refer to "Medical Policy and Student
Insurance Coverage".
Individuals may register for individual, or dual, competitions
as well as clinics, classes, trips or special events. Insurance
information and any related fees are required at the time of registration.
Team members may play for only one team per activity.
Failure to complete all registration and insurance forms
may result in name or team being removed from competition. Teams
using ineligible playersare subject to forfeit all contests in
which individual participates.
Important
All Interhall Rosters must be approved and signed by the team
captain. Hall Rector must sign and initial all rosters from their
hall.
Signing Up Others
Individuals may sign up other eligible students or staff
for individual or dual sports, classes, clinics, trips or special
events. All necessary fees must be paid at the time of registration.
If a person is registered for an event by someone else,
it is the registered person's responsibility to complete the insurance
requirements before participating.
All insurance requirements must be met by the teams
first contest. If insurance forms have not been completed by this
time, the individual may be removed from the participant list
and not be allowed to compete.
INTRAMURAL ELIGIBILITY
Undergraduate/Interhall - This division requires individuals
and teams to represent their living unit in undergraduate only
competition. Notre Dame Students only.
All full-time bona fide Notre Dame undergraduate students
will be allowed to participate, except as otherwise indicated
in this text. (see Who is Not Eligible)
A player must compete for the hall in which he/she resides.
Off-Campus undergraduates may choose to play for an Off-Campus
team, or with hall approval, may play as a member of their former
hall team. Hall rosters must indicate any members who do not reside
in the hall and be approved by the Rector.
If a member of a hall team moves from one hall to another
during a sport season, he/she may join the new hall team in that
particular sport. He/she is permitted to finish the remainder
of the season with the original hall, but will not be eligible
for future competition as a member of the original hall.
Team members may play for only one team per activity.
Team coaches, captains, managers and athletic commissioners
are responsible for the establishment of the eligibility of the
players on their rosters. If an ineligible players name
is found on a roster, the team will forfeit all games in the season.
For individual and dual competition, each individual is responsible
for his/her own eligibility.
Every competing unit must submit a roster or list of entries
for any sport prior to the entry deadline. Roster adjustments
may be made before the start of the first scheduled contest.
A student must have participated in at least two regular
season games or contests before he/she is eligible to compete
in any playoff or championship contest.
Varsity athletes may participate in sports other than the
one in which he/she has varsity status and any related sports.
Varsity athletes should obtain their varsity coachs
approval before participating in RecSports events.
Graduate Students/Faculty/Staff - All Notre Dame graduate
students, faculty and staff are eligible for this division Teams
may represent one or more departments.
All bona fide Notre Dame Graduate Students, Faculty and
Staff personnel are eligible for participation in the Graduate/Faculty/Staff
program.
Teams may be comprised of members of one or more departments.
Team coaches, captains and managers are responsible for
the establishment of the eligibility of the players on their rosters.
If an ineligible players name is found on a roster, the
team will forfeit all games in the season. For individual and
dual competition, individuals are responsible for his/her own
eligibility.
Team members may play for only one team per activity
CoRec - In this division each sport has independent rules
addressing fair play and inclusion. There are no other restrictions.
Only open to Notre Dame Students, Faculty and Staff. There
are no living unit or departmental restrictions in this division.
Any combination of groups or individuals may form a team.
Each sport will have gender roster limitations and special
rules.
Team members may play for only one team per activity.
Campus - Any individual or group of Notre Dame students,
faculty or staff may enter this division. There are no living
unit or departmental restrictions in this division. Any combination
of groups or individuals may form a team.
Saint Mary's College Participation
Generally Saint Mary's students, faculty and staff are not eligible
for RecSports programs, however, there are exceptions such as
the Domer Runs, Late Night Olympics and Christmas in April Benefit
Runs. Saint Mary's students are also eligible to participate on
Club Sport teams. All Saint Mary's students, faculty and staff
are ineligible for intramurals administered through RecSports.
Postponements
No regularly scheduled game or contest may be postponed
without the consent of the Director or Assistant Director, Intramurals.
Individuals and teams are warned not to accept notification
of a postponement from anyone except members of the Recreational
Sports staff.
Any request for rescheduling games or contests, must be
filed with the Office of Recreational Sports no less than 24 hours
before the game or contest is to take place.
Typically, reschedules are not permitted in officiated
sports.
Any request for postponement will be considered only after
the consent of both individuals or teams involved has been secured.
All postponed games or contests must be played before the
league schedule is completed. If reschedule dates are built into
the schedule, the rescheduled game must be played on one of those
dates. If rescheduled games are not played before the last game
of the season, the team requesting the reschedule will receive
a forfeit loss.
Any game or contest postponed by the Office of Recreational
Sports because of inclement weather, conflicts, etc., will be
rescheduled by the Sport Supervisor if possible, and the team
captains will be notified of the rescheduled dates.
In such cases where it is an impossibility to complete
a game or contest already started because of inclement weather
or darkness, the Department shall reschedule it and the game or
contest shall be completed. If a game is called after it is more
than half completed, the result is final.
Who is NOT Eligible for Interhall Competition.
A student who has won a monogram or letter from any college
or university granting a standard baccalaureate degree shall not
be eligible for Interhall athletic competition in that sport or
related sports.
A student on an athletic scholarship may not participate
in that Interhall sport or related sports.
Students who have participated in a varsity practice or
game after its first regular season varsity game are considered
ineligible for the Interhall sport or related sports during the
same academic year.
Professional athletes are ineligible to participate in
the sport or sports related to the sport in which they have played
professionally.
A student participating under an assumed name shall be
barred from all Interhall athletic competition for the current
year.
Graduate students, faculty and staff are ineligible to
participate in the Interhall athletic program. Special cases may
be appealed with the completion of a Roster Exemption from.
Teams may not play ineligible players, even by mutual consent
of both team captains, and other players in contests.
A varsity athlete may participate in sports other than the
one in which he/she has varsity status.
Protests Involving Contests
All protests shall be in writing and must be submitted
to the Office of Recreational Sports within 24 hours of contest
in question.
.No protest will be considered which concerns itself solely
with the judgment on the part of the official(s) in charge of
a contest.
If the eligibility of a player is questioned, that player
must be pointed out to the game official(s) during the contest
or proof of participation must be possible. An eye witness does
not constitute proof. The player in question must produce their
Notre Dame ID immediately. All players are required to have thieir
Notre Dame IDs in their possession.
A player whose eligibility has been questioned must present
himself or herself to the Office of Recreational Sports within
24 hours after being notified. (If a weekend, the following Monday).
If a player fails to report to the Office of Recreational
Sports, it will be presumed that the player is ineligible and
the contest in question will be forfeited.
.If a rule application is protested, the supervisor must
render a decision on site and that decision will stand, right
or wrong.
Forfeits
Forfeits have a detrimental effect on intramural sport programs
and are a frustrating experience to those individuals or teams
who were ready to play and no opponent appeared. For these reasons,
the following policies will be strictly adhered to:
Captains meetings for team sports are mandatory.
A representative from each team must be present. Should a team
miss its captains meeting they may be disqualified from competition
or penalized in some way.
If a contestant or a team fails to appear at the scheduled
place within five minutes after the scheduled time for a contest,
the supervisor will forfeit the contest to the individual or team
ready to play.
A competing unit playing an ineligible player shall forfeit
all contests in which the ineligible player participated, and
the ineligible player is barred from competition in that sport
for the rest of the schedule.
Any individuals or teams leaving the field of play before
a contest is completed or halted by the proper officials, will
forfeit all future rights to compete in the intramural program.
Any team that forfeits two games or contests will automatically
be eliminated from all further competition in that sport, and
their remaining opponents shall receive a forfeit victory.
If both contestants or teams fail to appear at the scheduled
site within five minutes after the scheduled time for the contest,
both will be charged with a forfeit.
Any violation of posted rules or regulations shall be grounds
for forfeiture of the contest involved.
To win a contest, game or match by forfeit, a regulation
team in a sport must be present and ready to play at the scheduled
time.
Forfeited contests will not be rescheduled.
If a team should voluntarily drop out of their scheduled
competition, their remaining opponents shall receive a forfeit
victory.
Any individual or team competing with unauthorized equipment
will forfeit that contest. Teams may not substitute personal equipment
for that issued by Recreational Sports. Uniforms may not show
sponsor names other than University sponsorship.
Protest Procedures
Protests must be filed as outlined. Eligibility is the
only protest that will be considered after the completion of the
contest.
If necessary, a protest board will be convened at the earliest
possible date.
The protest board will be comprised of the Assistant Director
(non-voting chairman), and five Hall Athletic Commissioners (randomly
picked, excluding any representatives of halls involved in the
protest).
Three representatives from each team, a player in question
and the officials involved in the protested contest shall be permitted
to present their version of the case to the protest board.
The protest board acts in an advisory capacity only and
will render their opinion to the Director.
Two (2) forfeits will result in elimination from further play
