February 2019: Erin Joyce

Erin Joyce Eom Feb 2019 500x300 01

"It is my pleasure to nominate Erin Joyce for the MOST Outstanding Student Employee of the Month for February. From her interview, when she took out a notebook full of questions about the job, I have been impressed with Erin's joyful attitude and work ethic. Erin was hired on in the middle of Spring 2018 and when she began working as an engineering camp counselor on campus over the summer, she offered right away to pick up a shift or two per day to help us out. I don't think that we could've gotten through the summer without Erin's help or her wonderful attitude. As the beginning of the school year rolled around, Erin volunteered to be a Fitness Attendant mentor to the new Fitness Attendants on staff, giving them an orientation to the job and helping to welcome them to the team. Erin has helped numerous Fitness Attendants transition into the role and I know I can always trust those that she works with to know their job inside and out. Erin is always "conveniently" around when someone calls short notice about not being able to show up for their shift. Every time I ask her to stay longer to help cover, she has never once hesitated to help the team, which has happened more times than I can count. Although it's her least favorite part of the job, Erin has become skilled in the art of stopping people from wreaking havoc in the weight room by deadlifting. Patrons almost always leave their conversations with a smile, even when she's telling them they're breaking a policy. Erin clearly has deep respect for the RecSports department, the facility, and all of her coworkers. I am so proud to have Erin on staff knowing that she is out on the floor creating positive experiences for the ND community and our staff. Thank you for the million and one things that you do for RecSports with the biggest smile on your face, Erin! For these reasons, I believe Erin truly does deserve to be the MOST Outstanding Student Employee of the Month for February."

What do you want to be when you grow up?

I want to develop assistive medical devices, such as prosthetics, to help those with disabilities.

What are the top 3 reasons you enjoy working at RecSports?

My coworkers make the job as fun as it is! I can honestly say that I have become good friends with the people on my shift. I also enjoy getting to know the patrons. Because the same people come in every one of my shifts, I get to know some of them on the job which makes it fun to run into them outside of the gym. Finally, working at the gym motivates me to work out, which is great!

What’s one thing you would like everyone at RecSports to know about you?

I think I'm a good luck charm, because no one has ever gotten hurt on one of my shifts!
