Quinn has stepped in to teach many of our courses this year and to lead hands-on skill practice sessions.

Quinn is one of the instructors whom we encourage new instructors to shadow. She ensures that the American Red Cross materials are followed while bringing her passion to the work. care for others, and dedication to safety. She provides critical feedback and encourages everyone to reach a high level of proficiency. This month, she also had to navigate the difficulty of not passing a group of participants in a course. She handled the situation better than many seasoned instructors would have. She made sure feedback was given throughout the course, spoke with the individuals about the decision, explaining the why, and listened to them when there was pushback. She also communicated promptly with professional staff and provided a thorough, heartfelt write-up for each participant, outlining what was needed for them to be prepared to take the course again. She also made sure that everyone knew the students who didn't pass were a pleasure to have in class and that she would cheer them on to try again.

She brought this experience back to the student-instructor team and provided valuable insight for other instructors who have not had to navigate a situation like this themselves.

Hailey returned this spring from a semester abroad and immediately hit the ground running. She stepped seamlessly back into her Head Lifeguard role, quickly reestablishing herself as a trusted leader, mentor, and confidant for the entire lifeguard team. Hailey brings a rare level of pride and integrity to her work. She holds herself to an exceptionally high standard and consistently challenges those around her to rise to the occasion.

Although training is not her primary focus area on the Head Guard team, Hailey took the initiative to lead the planning of our February in-service. She recognized a gap and stepped forward without hesitation, delivering a thoughtful and engaging experience for the staff.

This February’s in-service was structured as a scavenger hunt. Hailey spearheaded the trivia station, which required the most planning and organization. She also developed forms for the teams to use throughout the scavenger hunt and additional tasks for the guards to complete between stations. When she noticed other stations needed a bit more attention, she communicated proactively and offered support, ensuring the entire event was cohesive, organized, and positive.

As part of the scavenger hunt, lifeguards were invited to vote anonymously for a teammate they felt was doing an outstanding job. It was no surprise that Hailey’s name appeared more than any other. Even less surprising was her response — she immediately asked that other staff members be recognized instead of her.

Peer nominations described Hailey as approachable and knowledgeable about Rock operations, consistently helpful and kind, and always willing to step in when needed — including jumping into a mid-day lifeguard shift when the team was short-staffed.

Hailey’s growth during her time with RecSports has been remarkable. In Spring 2024, she was hesitant to speak up, avoided the spotlight, and lacked confidence in navigating difficult peer conversations. In Spring 2026, she stands as a confident, capable leader who fully embodies the values of Student Development and the culture we strive to create.

Summer Operations Announcement (May 2025)

To continue to provide opportunities for the Notre Dame community to stay active and engaged throughout the summer, RecSports will modify various facility hours in the weeks and months ahead. Additional facility updates will be shared on the RecSports website as they become available. Thank you in advance for your flexibility.

Modified Summer Hours and Facility Closures
Beginning Saturday, May 10, RecSports will shift to modified summer hours. The Smith Center for Recreational Sports and the Climbing Wall will remain open on Monday, May 12, and Tuesday, May 13, and again following Commencement Weekend on Monday, May 19. The Rockne Memorial and the North Dome will be closed for the summer. St. Joseph Beach will also be closed except for pre-approved events reserved through RecSports.

Senior Week and Commencement Weekend Closures
In recognition of Senior Week and Commencement Weekend, and to accommodate facility maintenance and new equipment deliveries, all RecSports facilities will be closed from Wednesday, May 14, through Sunday, May 18. Facilities will reopen with updated summer hours and offerings on Monday, May 19.

Smith Center Repairs and Maintenance
Beginning Monday, May 19, construction will begin in the Smith Center to replace the wood fitness activity studio floors and repair the basketball court. Three of the four available studios and all of the basketball courts will be offline until the start of the 2025 fall semester. All other facility areas will remain open throughout construction.

RecSports anticipates short-term closures of the Smith Center and the Climbing Wall when construction requires the building be cleared of staff and participants for safety reasons. Any changes to operating hours will be announced in advance and shared on the RecSports website.

Group Fitness Passes: Summer Discount
To help you stay moving all summer long, RecSports will offer a discounted Group Fitness pass for $45, which grants access to all fitness classes offered throughout the summer session.
As the end of the academic year approaches, we want to celebrate the dedicated graduating staff members at RecSports who have contributed their time, energy, and passion to making the program a welcoming and successful environment. These graduating seniors have not only helped keep RecSports running smoothly but have also left a lasting impact on their peers, participants, and the overall campus community.

Each year, RecSports relies on student staff to manage facilities, lead intramural sports, oversee the climbing & bouldering wall, inform the ND community about updates and programs, and ensure that daily operations run efficiently. Many of these students have juggled their academic responsibilities while serving as leaders within RecSports, embodying the mission, vision, and values.

While every senior who has worked with RecSports deserves recognition, a few individuals have stood out for their exceptional contributions.

Haley Hinkel is a senior science-business major with minors in compassionate care in medicine and science, technology, and values from Springboro, Ohio. She began working for RecSports in the spring of her freshman year as an attendant before getting promoted to Operations Supervisor shortly after. Additionally, she is a part of CRAB, the Campus RecSports Advisory Board, helping coordinate appreciation events for staff and improving RecSports programs. And finally, she recently took on an additional role as a RecSports Office Support Liaison. She works primarily at the Smith Center and North Dome and has much experience handling injuries and performing first aid services at RecSports facilities. Haley’s favorite thing about RecSports is the community, fostering close bonds with professional and student staff, as well as RecSports patrons. Haley’s favorite memories of RecSports are a culmination of small moments throughout her time with RecSports, whether it be connecting with prostaff and especially her connection with Shark, who has cheered her on at interhall basketball championships and mentored her throughout her years at RecSports.

Owen Nettles is a Climbing Wall Attendant, Head Route Setter, and occasionally a coach at the RecSports climbing wall. Owen is also a senior electrical engineering major from New Hope, Pennsylvania. His favorite part about working at the climbing wall is the strong community among staff and patrons, including encouraging new climbers and taking ownership of the experience that patrons have at our wall as head route setter. One of Owen’s favorite memories was being a planner and contributor to Gravity Fest, RecSports’s annual bouldering competition. Despite the challenges that came with planning an event, Owen was proud and excited to watch everyone participate.

Courtney Albertson is a senior originally from Fowler, IN. She currently lives off campus, but resided in Lyons Hall on campus. She majors in Business Analytics and Economics. Courtney has been a Lifeguard with RecSports for the past three years, and this past school year, she had the opportunity to serve as one of the Head Lifeguards. Courtney loves working for RecSports because it offers great flexibility with her schedule and allows her to work with an incredible team. She has worked a variety of shifts at Rockne Memorial, from opening at 5:30 a.m. on Mondays to closing on weekends. These experiences have allowed her to connect with all of the amazing lifeguards on staff and get to know some of our regular swimmers, which has made the job even more rewarding! Courtney’s favorite RecSports memory was during fall training, when the entire aquatics team had the chance to bond while practicing saves and playing fun games. After the guards refreshed their in-water skills, they had fun playing friendly competitions like brick wars and relays. For Courtney, it was a great opportunity to meet new team members and strengthen connections with current ones!

Maddie Taylor is a senior from Houston, Texas. She majors in Science Business and minors in Theology. Madeline has plans to attend medical school next year. While she lives off campus now, she is a proud Ryan Hall Wildcat! She has held a lifeguard position with RecSports since Fall 2021. This semester, Madeline even started a new role as an Office Liaison in the pro-staff office! She enjoys working with RecSports because the professional staff truly cares about the students. She acknowledges that they want their employees to succeed both within RecSports and in their personal lives. She acknowledges Bri, Assistant Director of Aquatics, who often comes down to the pool just to chat with the guards and catch up. She knows all of the pro-staff have made it clear that students can come to them for guidance or advice on anything. RecSports also understands that we are students first, Lastly, Madeline thinks her coworkers are great! Her lifeguard shifts consist of watching the pool and getting to know the other guards. She has gotten to meet so many amazing people that I may not have crossed paths with otherwise. Her favorite RecSports memory is from a lifeguard in-service this past semester, where the head guards came up with more ways to make the in-service more fun. They led the team in a game of Hungry, Hungry Hippos-pool edition. The pool was filled with plastic balls, and it was the guards' job to use kickboards to bat as many balls as possible into their team's goal. Madeline says this game was not only great swim conditioning, but also allowed the guards to show their competitive sides and bond with their teammates!

Sela Chamberlin is a senior studying Finance and Real Estate from Naples, Florida. She was a resident in McGlinn Hall but is now off-campus. Sela has worked as a Marketing Assistant for 2 years, and this past year she was promoted to the Marketing Lead position, where she was a program assistant. Sela took on additional responsibilities such as assisting during team meetings, keeping assignments organized, and maintaining lines of communication with the Marketing Assistants, and ultimately built a more successful, collaborative team! Sela likes working for RecSports because everyone is super friendly and supportive. As a sophomore, Sela was inexperienced and nervous to start her new job with RecSports, but working with her team, Veronica, and the other RecSports employees helped her grow into her position as a Marketing Assistant and now Marketing Lead. She has been able to contribute new ideas and receive the resources needed to bring marketing concepts to life in video form and more. Sela’s favorite RecSports memory was the Marketing Team meeting last semester when the team put puzzle pieces together in groups. She thought it was an activity that brought everyone together, and she fondly remembers everyone laughing and having a great time.

Connor McCloskey is a biological sciences major from Crown Point, Indiana, and a proud Keenan Hall resident. Over the years, he's been deeply involved in his dorm community as President, Senator, RA, and a head writer for the Keenan Revue. At RecSports, Connor has worked as a personal trainer, sharing his passion for fitness—a journey that started back during COVID-19. For him, training has been more than just exercise; it's been a space to set goals, reduce stress, and build confidence. One of his favorite memories was when a client returned to buy another training package; that moment meant a lot and helped him grow into the trainer he is today. As he prepares to head to medical school, Connor says he's thankful for all the people he’s met and the meaningful experiences he’s had through RecSports.

Stephanie Atampugre is a Mechanical Engineering major from Atlanta, Georgia, and a resident of Welsh Family Hall. She has worked as a Sports Programs Manager with RecSports, a role that’s given her the chance to connect with nearly every part of the RecSports team, from pro staff to supervisors and facilities crew. For Stephanie, those daily interactions and the chance to learn about her coworkers’ lives and goals have been a highlight of her time on campus. She also loved getting to watch some of the more competitive sides of ND students during games. One of her favorite memories goes back to her first RecSports encounter at the Activities Fair freshman year. After spotting the black-and-white striped ref shirts, she spoke with former pro staffers at the booth and signed up to be a flag football official on the spot. Their kindness and excitement made a lasting impression and introduced her to the welcoming community that RecSports has been ever since.

Phil Trzaska is an Aerospace Engineering major with a minor in Energy Studies from Minster, Ohio. He’s called O’Neill Family Hall home for the past four years and has spent three of those years working with RecSports—first as a Sport Programs Supervisor and then as a MOD. Phil was drawn to RecSports after experiencing how impactful intramural sports were during his freshman year. It was through those games that he met people across campus and built lasting friendships, and he wanted to help create that same welcoming environment for others. Some of his favorite memories include winning the B-Team basketball championship, playing sand volleyball with his dorm, and joining “All-Red FC,” O’Neill’s soccer B-Team. He also loved playing on “Rec ‘n Roll” teams with his coworkers. For Phil, some of the most unexpected and meaningful moments came from conversations with the professional staff—something he didn’t expect going in, but is incredibly grateful for now.

As they move on to new opportunities, we extend our deepest gratitude to the graduating senior staff. Their dedication has helped shape the program into what it is today, and their legacy will continue to inspire future student staff members. Congratulations, seniors—we wish you all the best in your next adventures!

For April, RecSports is excited to highlight a student employee's contributions to our RecSports community here at Notre Dame. This month, we are thrilled to feature Olivia Curtis, a Personal Trainer and Women on Weights Instructor! She is also a Campus RecSports Leadership Board member and an Office Assistant. She can almost always be found in the RecSports Office working hard to bring a fulfilling experience to those who participate in RecSports’ variety of offers.

Originally from Bellevue, Washington, Olivia is a senior studying political science in her third year of working for RecSports. Her favorite class is currently “The Age of Alexander”, a course dedicated to Alexander the Great and Hellenistic Greece, which she loves for its dramatic coverage of the ancient Macedonian aristocracy, which parallels the dramatics of reality TV.

When not working in one of her many RecSports roles or learning about Hellenistic Greece, Olivia likes to stay active by lifting weights and running, as well as painting and cooking. This semester, she has challenged herself to attend all group fitness classes before she graduates, so she also enjoys attending 1-2 RecSports fitness classes per week. Her favorite class is currently Zumba!

Olivia’s favorite thing about working for RecSports is the community and culture, citing her coworkers and ProStaff as creating a supportive and fun environment. Olivia also loves being able to share her passion for fitness with others! Additionally, the opportunities for professional development have made Olivia’s three years with RecSports rewarding and encouraging. Her favorite RecSports memory is laughing at her jokes while MCing the RecSports Christmas party and dropping the ticket basket on stage.

Thank you, Olivia, for all that you do for RecSports and our Notre Dame community!

Allie is a senior at the University of Notre Dame from Saint Louis, MO. Currently, she is a resident in Lyons Hall. She is an economics major with post-graduation plans to move to Washington, D.C. to work in economic counseling. In her spare time, Allie enjoys doing gymnastics on the Notre Dame Club Gymnastics team as well as coaching a middle school lacrosse team. Allie says her favorite class she has taken was a Wood Sculpture class, where she says she learned so many practical skills that she can take with her after graduation, as well as giving her a greater art appreciation.

As a RecSports Lifeguard, you can find her working at Rockne Memorial. Her instructing position allows her to recertify lifeguards, lead in-services, and perform skill checks. Allie is known for her dedication as a lifeguard, as seen in her commitment to becoming not only Lifeguard certified but also certified to teach others!

Allie likes working for RecSports because of her love for physical activity, fitness, and her love for being outside. She can combine these aspects by giving others the ability to stay active in the pool as well as having the opportunities to work outside guarding St. Joseph's Lake! She also gives credit to her coworkers, who she says are a fantastic team of people to work with. Her favorite part of Lifeguarding is getting to know the coworkers she works with consistently. She typically works opening shifts, and says she loves building connections with the people she spends her mornings with, as it makes the job more enjoyable and creates a great sense of teamwork.

Allie’s dedication to her role as a Lifeguard and Lifeguard Instructor and her passion for helping others make her a vital member of the RecSports team. Her enthusiasm for fitness, teamwork, and commitments outside of work highlight her well-rounded character. Her hard work and positive attitude contribute not only to the safety and success of RecSports programs but also to the strong bonds she forms with her coworkers. She is a true asset to the Notre Dame RecSports community!

As we start February, RecSports is thrilled to highlight one of our incredible student employees who goes above and beyond to ensure our sports program runs smoothly and provides a welcoming environment for all participants. This month, we’re excited to recognize Hannah Blaskiewicz, a manager on duty (MoD) whose hard work, passion, and dedication make her an invaluable part of our team.

Hannah is a senior studying accounting and history. She’s originally from Long Island, NY but on campus is a Resident Assistant in Johnson Family Hall. When she’s not studying or working, she’s usually in the Smith Center or walking around the lakes. In her spare time, she likes to play intramural sports, run, and read. Hannah’s favorite class is her history thesis because the program and class allowed her to research and learn about a topic that she finds interesting.

Hannah has extensive experience working in Sports Programs. She started working with RecSports as an official, became a supervisor, and then was promoted to a Manager on Duty. In her role as MoD, she brings equipment to facilities where programs are running for the night, helps link supervisors to professional staff, and ensures that programming runs smoothly. Her favorite part about being an MoD is working with the professional staff, officials, supervisors, and other MoDs. She enjoys catching up with everyone at the beginning of a shift.

Working at RecSports has been a great experience for Hannah. She has found community with her co-workers who look out for each other and enjoy working together. After reflecting on her memories at RecSports, she looks fondly on her time playing on intramural teams specifically, playing in the championship for co-recreation flag football. Another highlight was the Kahoot engagement announcement during a staff meeting.

Thank you, Hannah, for your outstanding contributions and for embodying the spirit of RecSports. We’re lucky to have you!

Meet Olivia!

We had the pleasure of sitting down with Olivia, a seasoned personal trainer with a passion for transforming lives through health and fitness. In this interview, we'll uncover Olivia's journey into the realm of fitness, explore her training philosophy, and gain insights into the Women on Weights instructional series. Whether you're a fitness enthusiast or someone taking their first steps towards a healthier lifestyle, this conversation promises to be both informative and inspiring.

1. Why did you become a personal trainer?

I got really into fitness back in high school and I have benefitted both mentally and physically from my dedication to exercise. Becoming a personal trainer has enabled me to share those benefits with others, especially women who want to learn how to become confident in the free weights section. I love to see women realize how strong they are!

2. What is Women on Weights?

Women on Weights is a small group class that meets weekly for four weeks to practice exercising with free weights. The class is both practical and educational- while we focus on getting a great workout in, we also discuss lifting techniques and the science behind our movements. The four-week series revolves around three foundational barbell lifts (squat, deadlift, bench press), but we also learn and practice lots of dumbbell and bodyweight exercises!

3. Why should women weight train?

Although there tend to be fewer women in the free weights section, women in particular should implement weight training into their fitness routines for many reasons. For one, women are more susceptible to chronic conditions (such as osteoporosis). Regular resistance training has been shown to contribute to the prevention of such conditions, making weight training a crucial form of exercise, especially as we age. Additionally, the women in the weightlifting community are super uplifting and supportive and you will find this kind of community in Women on Weights!

4. What are the benefits of regular weight training?

Weight training is associated with many physiological benefits, including reduced risk of chronic disease, increase in muscular strength and stability, and positive body composition adaptations such as decreased body fat and increased muscle mass. Furthermore, weight training has been shown to produce many positive psychological effects. These include higher motivation to exercise, increased self-confidence, and increased global cognitive function. Weight training has also been shown to decrease anxiety and increase one’s self-perceived health!

5. What kind of instructor are you?

When I am instructing, I prioritize motivation and education. The Women on Weights workouts can be challenging at times, and I love to coach and motivate participants as they push themselves. I always challenge participants to try new things- whether that be attempting a lift with a heavier weight than they are used to or picking up a weight for the first time, Women on Weights is a place for women to rethink their limits. Above all, I love to see women grow in their confidence!

6. What kind of person would benefit from Women on Weights?

Any woman looking to learn the foundations of weightlifting would benefit from Women on Weights! Whether you are completely new to lifting or have significant experience, Women on Weights is a great class to work on your lifting technique. Additionally, anyone looking to get a great workout in and push themselves would enjoy the class. If you are looking to perfect your weightlifting technique and want to challenge yourself with a great community of women, then Women on Weights is for you!
