The Notre Dame Club Wrestling team’s first home event held Sunday, January 19th, was overall a successful one. Notre Dame hosted the University of Pittsburgh and the University of Michigan to a tri-meet held in the Stepan Center. Pitt defeated Michigan 24-19 in the first match of the day. Notre Dame lost to Pitt 27-21 in the second match of the day, but went on to defeat Michigan 28-23. Both of ND’s team matches came down to wire, and the winner of the last individual match (the 285 lb. weight class) was the deciding factor for the team score. Tom Bagiakas was the hero of the match against Michigan. With Notre Dame losing 19-23, Bagiakas secured a crucial 3-1 victory in the penultimate 235 lb. weight class to make the team score 22-23. Michael Kress then received a forfeit at the 285 lb. weight class to propel Notre Dame to a 28-23 victory. Garrett Schmelling, Matt Boylan, and Mike Murphy were strong contributors to the team’s success as well, wrestling in the 141 lb., 149 lb., and 174 lb. weight classes, respectively. All three wrestlers defeated both of their opponents on the day. Schmelling kept his undefeated season alive now with a 5-0 record on the season, while Boylan improved to 4-1. The two are Notre Dame’s leading point scorers in the NCWA.
