The Notre Dame Wrestling Club continued to build upon their successful inaugural season as the team recorded three wins and only one loss at the Glass City Duals in Toledo, OH on Saturday, February 8th. The University of Toledo hosted the round-robin style team tournament that featured eight teams. Notre Dame began the day with a rematch against their most recent opponent, the University of Michigan. This time, the Fightin’ Irish won handily with a final score of 35-24, after winning 28-23 on January 19th at home. In their second match, Notre Dame lost to a tough Grand Valley State University team 31-21. Grand Valley State is currently ranked 6th nationally in the NCWA. Notre Dame bounced back from their loss to defeat Bowling Green State University 39-24. With this victory, the Irish finished second in their pool and were slated to wrestle the University of Pittsburgh for 3rd place at the event. Recall that Notre Dame lost to Pittsburgh 27-21 in South Bend on January 19th, and the Irish wrestlers were eager to avenge that loss. The final score was 27-23, marking a strong finish to a successful day. Garrett Schmelling and Ben Evans were key contributors to the team’s achievements, wrestling in the 141 lb. and 197 lb. weight classes, respectively. Both wrestlers finished the day with four wins and zero losses. Schmelling’s undefeated season continues, and his record now stands at 9-0. The teams’s season record is now 4-5, and the team is 4-1 in their last five matches. Notre Dame will continue to work to improve as it looks forward to the final event of the year, the Great Lakes Conference Tournament, which will be held on March 1st at Grand Valley State University.
